CCTV proves its’ worth in snaring international burglary gang…

…prompting Secure Home Systems to remind people of its’ value in protecting their homes.

Police in the West Midlands revealed today how they had snared a gang of “prolific” burglars using CCTV evidence.

The gang ransacked more than 50 homes across the region stealing jewellery and cash totalling more than £300,000 but were eventually caught on the run after being identified by camera footage from the homes of some of their victims.

The case has highlighted the value of having CCTV in your home and today staff at Wolverhampton-based Secure Home Systems reminded people that a basic two camera system was invaluable in the fight against crime.

The burglars, arrested last summer, had targeted homes across Birmingham, Sandwell, Solihull and Walsall breaking into homes when the householders were away and stealing valuables.

Police were able to track the gang to Ireland using hours of CCTV footage taken from homes that they had targeted. The cameras caught the men using an Audio R3 and a VW Golf and then pieced together their movements via phone records.

Four men Jason McDonaugh, Darren O’Halloran, Barney Casey and Daniel Harty, originally from Ireland, were convicted of conspiracy to burgle following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

McDonaugh was jailed for 13 years, O’Halloran and Harty 12 years each and Casey 10 years and six months.

Michael Vry, Chairman of Secure Home Systems said: “This case was truly shocking but, had it not been for CCTV at the homes of some of those targeted, this gang might never have been caught.”

He said CCTV was usually enough of a deterrent but if burglars were adamant on breaking in, the cameras captured evidence in cases such as this.

At Secure Home Systems we recommend using CCTV in conjunction with a monitored alarm as this gives your home the greatest protection of all.
