Smoke Alarms Are Essential In Keeping You And Your Family Safe & Secure

Smoke alarms are essential in keeping you and your family safe & secure; at secure home systems we have a wide range of home security systems, including fire alarms.

No smoke without fire. Quit smoking and get an alarm before it sparks a house blaze, fire chiefs warn.

Customers are being reminded of the risks of smoking after a survey by the London Fire Brigade revealed the number of house fires linked to cigarettes is on the rise.

The survey, carried out to coincide with National No Smoking Day, discovered that up to three house blazes a day are linked to smoking with at least two people a week injured.

In the last five years there have been 76 deaths in the London area from smoking-related house fires with smoking still the largest cause of fatal fires.

The survey also found in 2021 there were 1,213 smoke-related blazes in the London region with 108 people injured.

Most fires start in the bedroom and – while vaping is deemed a lot safer – there were still four fires recorded in the last year in the metropolitan area from e-cigarettes usually caused by a charger overheating.

Elderly and vulnerable people were at the greatest risk from smoking-related fires because they often struggled to get out of their house before being overcome by thick, chocking black smoke.

Dan Harper, Head of Engineering at On Call Group, said although quitting the habit was the best option for our health – the second best was to ensure your home is fitted with a fully operational smoke alarm.

And he warned if residents had a smoking room in their home, then they would need a heat detector instead in that location, to stop the smoke setting off the fire alarm by mistake.

“Our home security systems are supported with a smoke alarm which gives direct access to the fire brigade through our monitoring station,“he said.

“The minute smoke is detected, and the alarm activated, our monitoring station will call you to check that you are ok and, if there is no response from yourself and your keyholders, then the fire brigade will be summoned automatically.”

Assistant Commissioner for London Fire Brigade Dan Daly said: “Sadly people often fall asleep whilst smoking or just carelessly dispose of matches and cigarette butts which can then smoulder and cause fires.

“Quitting smoking is not only good for your health but also makes a devastating fire in your home less likely.

“If you must smoke, at least make sure you have the appropriate fire prevention systems on every floor of your property”

Fire facts:

  • Half of all accidental fatal fire deaths in the home are caused by smoking

  • Last year there were 11 smoking-related fires per week in the London area

  • At least one person a year dies from a smoking-related fire

  • Domestic fires are down overall 50 per cent from their highest point in 2016 thanks to fire safety campaigns.
