Do you feel unsafe in your neighbourhood?

People living in Birmingham are the least likely to report a crime or an incident because they fear nothing will be done about it – according to a national survey released this week.

And those residing in the wider West Midlands – including Wolverhampton - feel the most unsafe, the questionnaire by the National Crime and Community Survey found.

The survey, conducted by Neighbourhood Watch said that the biggest fears of the community were anti-social behaviour, burglary and cyber-crime.

The findings were today analysed by Michael Vry, Chairman of Secure Home Systems – based in Wolverhampton.

He said: “Burglary and anti-social behaviour are still two of the biggest concerns for thepublic which is why we always recommend people look at a monitored burglar alarm and CCTV system to keep them, their families and their homes safe.”

John Hayward-Cripps, CEO of Neighbourhood Watch Network said: “It is clear from our findings that we must continue to prioritise sharing resources and raising awareness of antisocial behaviour, burglary and cybercrime

“A staggering 46 per of people didn’t report a crime last year with five per cent saying they were too scared to do so. It is therefore important we empower people to take the actions to protect themselves and prevent these crimes from impacting their communities.”

Whilst Birmingham topped the list of those not reporting crime, London came out as the crime capital of the UK with 46 per cent of people having suffered from crime or been impacted by it. In the North-East this was 44 per cent.

Of the 28,909 people questioned for the survey, the South-West was found to have the least crime whilst the West Midlands was the hot bed for the fear of crime.
